Throughout his tenure, DGP Ashok Kumar has undertaken various initiatives for the police. However, the incoming DGP Abhinav Kumar will also face several challenges. In his interaction with the media a day before his retirement, DGP Ashok Kumar highlighted traffic, drugs, and cybercrime as significant challenges for the future.
During this period, he also reflected on his 34 years of service. He stated that he had aimed for a firm and sensitive approach to policing, which has been successful to a large extent. The police remained empathetic towards the victims while adopting a strict attitude towards criminals.
In fact, the biggest challenge during DGP Ashok Kumar’s tenure was the shortage of personnel and inadequate recruitment for a long time. However, as soon as he took charge, he actively pursued the recruitment process. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic and various restrictions, he ultimately succeeded in conducting constable recruitments and ranker examinations.
During the three-year tenure of DGP Ashok Kumar, the major challenge was the lack of personnel and the absence of recruitment for a prolonged period. However, as soon as he assumed charge, he prioritized addressing this issue and successfully conducted recruitments despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The police made efforts to find a middle ground by coordinating with the government. This led to the recruitment of women in the fire brigade for the first time and the formation of a women commando squad. The issue of grade pay for the police force also arose, leading to demonstrations by their family members. However, by coordinating with the government, the police achieved a satisfactory resolution.
The police awarded several promotions to constables and head constables, and they constructed new buildings in the police lines. The construction of the six–storey Patel Bhawan, which replaced the DIG office, provided adequate seating space for officers. Under the leadership of DGP Ashok Kumar, the police conducted numerous successful campaigns targeting major criminals and achieved significant results.
Here are some campaigns
These campaigns included Operation Prahar, Mission Maryada, Operation Smile, Operation Mukti, and Mission Hausla, each focused on specific objectives such as arresting criminals, maintaining order at pilgrimage sites, reuniting missing individuals with their families, enrolling beggar children into school, and providing assistance to people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Efforts were made to prioritize and address public complaints, resulting in a 96% resolution rate for a total of 29,938 complaints. A Redressal Committee resolved 9,335 out of 9,737 complaints filed by policemen. Additionally, the police worked on improving the traffic situation by implementing online challan systems and enhancing enforcement measures.
Despite making significant progress during his tenure, DGP Ashok Kumar expressed regret that the traffic problem could not be completely solved due to infrastructure limitations and the high number of vehicles. Nonetheless, he focused on the overall welfare and facilities for the police force in various ways.
